Large Language Models are often referred to as the biggest advancement in technology of the 2030s. However, underlying flaws in their design principles have rendered them useless for nearly all industries. This essay outlines the weaknesses in LLM designs and how they culminate in a product that has been ultimately unsuccessful commercially. Together, we will cover model agreeableness, flaws in human languages themselves, early implementations of guardrails, and how ultimately the human spirit came out ahead.

Death Stub

Content Warning: euthanasia, suicide.

What would you do if today was your last day? How different would it be if you had known about it for the last 6 months?

This is what had been going through my mind the last wee while. I thought that by the time today came around I would feel a bit calmer than I do now, maybe even a sense of relief. But this morning I woke up with a feeling of anxiety in the pit of my stomach. Did I do everything I was supposed to? You would think at 96 I wouldn’t give a fuck anymore, but even at this age, I still thought about my kids a lot. The last thing I wanted to do was leave them cleaning up after me.

No longer here

It had stood in place like this for centuries. Kind of. Its descent was imperceptibly slow.

From a distance now it might appear to be a tower, nearly perfectly vertical, with only the fins peeking out above the dense foliage of the forest. It was only when you got up close that you could tell that it wasn’t quite touching the ground yet.

The 200 ft object hung in the air like a drop of water frozen in time. It was mottled in moss and the occasional vine; collections of epiphytes claimed their home not in the crooks of branches but between metallic vents and larger seams in the metal.

Kalou's Noodle Bar

As I entered, the warmth welcomed me. I sat down in a single booth up against the wall where I was closer to the fire that crackled and popped gently in the corner of the room. The noodle shop was small, 6 single booths lined up along the bar. Each had a little screen that would slide over so you could be served and a little flag that could be flicked out to show that you needed service. Between the bar and the entrance sat two larger tables that could each accommodate a group of eight if you were determined enough. These were currently empty, but the restaurant would be bustling later and there would be people vying for seats as soon as another patron left.

Morning Routine

In the sunlight, the hulking mecha would have been impossible to miss. But, in the early hours of the morning, the nearly three-storey-tall robot towered against the night sky, nearly invisible. While most wouldn’t notice it, someone with keener-eyes may see the mecha’s pitch black silhouette blocking out the swirling cosmos in the sky above.

Haruka stirred within the passenger pod, her makeshift bed nestled snugly in the densely armoured droid. The pod, designed to carry two extra people, now held only her, surrounded by the essentials for survival. Clothes hung from the roll cage above, drying from the previous day’s wash. Metal tins containing rations lined the floor under the seat, and a massive 300-litre water tank occupied most of the remaining space. Though cramped, the space felt cosy, a reflection of Haruka’s resourcefulness.
